Pantala:

sustainable box of tasting cooked insects

Packaging design
University project

This packaging seeks to communicate adventure by inviting clients to taste foods that not many people are willing to eat,
it invites them to make an intercultural and intercontinental journey in a single tasting box.

Entomophagy is the ingestion of insects as food for humans. It is widespread in some cultures and it's mainly practiced in Asia, Africa and Latin America, although they have always been included throughout history in human eating behavior.

Due to the newness of entomophagy in today’s Spanish market, it was thought that the best way to introduce insects into supermarkets is through a tasting box where “the brave ones” who want to try it can experience different flavors and discover their favorites.

The different ways to consume the insects around the world were studied and six insects from different origins that did not need additional seasonings were selected, this way there is no extra costs imposing on the client.

The packaging of this product consists of two triangular cardboard boxes. The inner container is thicker and has different compartments tailored for insects. Meanwhile, the outer box allows the consumer, at the time of purchase, to lift the flap and read the additional information, as well as to see the product through the transparent surface.

Process and tools

Investigation and ideation

First, the meaning of entomophagy was investigated, how these foods were usually consumed was studied, and a survey was conducted to find the potential audience for the product. With that information began the brainstorming of possible ways to market insects into the Spanish supermarkets.

Prototiping and presentation

The most suitable insects for sale were then investigated and paper prototypes were made to understand the dimensions and joints of the product. Graphics were created and three-dimensional representations were made with illustrator and photoshop to present the packaging at the end of the course.

Final rendering

Years later, using keyshot, several images were rendered to show the final packaging in a more attractive and realistic way. The aim was to create the same line of minimalist graphics that would make the product stand out while showing all its angles and functions.
